From Worldly to Worthy: Embracing Modesty as My Identity (Part two)

Transformation is not an overnight process—it is a journey of surrender, faith, and refinement. As I walked deeper with God, I began to notice something remarkable: my outward appearance was changing, but so was my heart.

While pursuing my Computer Science degree at Shalom University in DRC Congo, Bunia, people often mistook me for a Theology student. Why? Because I was always involved in ministry, dressed decently, and carried myself with intentionality. At first, I found it amusing, but then I realized the deeper meaning—what was on the inside was now fully reflected on the outside. My transformation was undeniable.

But the real test came when I moved to Kenya in 2018 to further my studies at Pan African Christian University. Away from home, I had the freedom to redefine myself. No one knew me. I could have chosen to blend in, to conform. Yet, the person I had become in Christ was not something I could leave behind.

Once again, people assumed I was a Theology student, simply because my lifestyle, speech, and dress reflected a deep commitment to God. This reinforced my conviction: true faith is evident, even without words.

God began using my modesty as a ministry. I remember one day, a woman in a supermarket approached me with a smile. “I have been seeing you around, and I just want to say—I admire how you dress. It’s rare to see young women like you.”

Another time, a motorbike rider who had been seeing me since 2018 stopped me and said, “You’ve been here for years, and I have never seen you change how you dress. It’s amazing.”

These were not just compliments; they were confirmations. People were watching, and my consistency was speaking louder than I ever imagined.

This reminded me of Matthew 5:16:"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

I have learned that modesty is more than just fabric covering the skin—it is a posture of the heart, a reflection of who we are in Christ. It is about walking in obedience, even when no one is watching.

Some days, when I fail to start my morning with prayer, I feel the difference. I realize that my modesty is not just about what I wear; it is about staying spiritually connected to God. Without Him, I am nothing.

Message to My Sisters in Christ

To every young woman reading this, I ask you: What is the one thing people identify you with?

Do they see Christ in you before you even speak? Does your lifestyle reflect your faith? You are a walking testimony, whether you realize it or not.

I never set out to be "the girl who always dresses modestly." But over time, I realized that God was using my consistency to inspire others.

There were moments when I questioned whether my commitment to modesty truly mattered. Was it really making a difference? Did anyone even notice? But every time doubt crept in, God sent a reminder—whether through a stranger’s kind words, a friend’s encouragement, or a deep conviction in my heart.

I came to understand that modesty wasn’t just about clothing; it was about something much deeper. It was about being a vessel for God’s glory. It was about demonstrating that faith is more than words—it’s a way of life. It was about honoring God not just in prayer and worship but in how I carried myself daily.

The Challenge of Standing Firm

Of course, this journey wasn’t without challenges. There were times when people questioned my choices, mocked my convictions, or tried to persuade me to "loosen up." Even within Christian circles, not everyone understood my stand.

But I learned a valuable lesson: when you truly walk with God, you don’t need the approval of the world. Galatians 1:10 became a verse I held onto:

"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

I wasn’t dressing modestly for recognition or praise. I was doing it as an act of worship, as a reflection of the transformation God had done in my heart.

Embracing Your Unique Calling

To my fellow sisters in Christ: I encourage you to embrace what makes you unique in God’s eyes. Maybe it’s your kindness, your speech, your integrity, or even the way you dress. Whatever it is, let it reflect Christ.

Your life speaks louder than you think. Your consistency is a testimony. People may never tell you they are watching, but they are. And through your faithfulness, someone may be drawn closer to God.

So, stand firm. Walk boldly in your calling. Let your light shine—because when you live for Christ, every part of you, even the way you dress, becomes a reflection of His grace and love.
